What is Exploring Early Childhood Curriculum: Play, Participation and Possibilities (Flight course)?
This free online course, funded by the Ministry of Children’s Services and delivered by MacEwan University, explores Flight: Alberta’s Early Learning and Care Framework. In the course, you will be introduced to curriculum framework core concepts, holistic goals and dispositions to learn, and begin to consider how to integrate them in daily practice.
Who should take the course?
The non-credit online course is designed for Alberta Early Childhood Educators and program administrators who are working with young children and their families in licensed and approved programs. This includes childcare, family day homes, out of school care, and community based preschools.
What will the course involve?
The course is 22 weeks long and includes live online classes, discussion posts and reflective writing assignments. Course participants commit four to six hours per week to course learning activities, and upon successful completion will receive a certificate.
Attendance at seven live online evening collaborate sessions is expected over the 22 weeks. Dates and times for the collaborate session will be provided by the instructor at the start of the course. To see a sample schedule please click here.

How will students learn?
A course instructor and course facilitator will support your learning. The course is divided into eight online learning modules that include discussion posts and responses, reflective writing assignments, and live online collaborate sessions. Students will receive two free textbooks in the mail once their registration is processed.

How many hours per week are expected?
Students can expect to dedicate four to six hours of time per week for the duration of the course. The course requires consistent attendance and active participation.
How do I express my interest in taking the course?
Go to the course page and click “I am interested.” Complete and submit the online form. Watch the website for information in June for the fall course, and in October for the winter course.
What kind of technology is required for participation?
After students receive ID and login information from MacEwan University, they can log in to MacEwan’s learning management system and their own MacEwan University email.
Students will also have access to online learning tools, including a live online video conferencing tool to connect with the course instructor and other students. While this tool works with many browsers, Google Chrome is highly recommended.
For the best course experience, students are encouraged to use a computer-installed video camera and external headphones with a microphone. Additional information regarding technology requirements will be provided to students following course registration.
When is the course offered?
The Flight course is offered twice a year. Fall term begins in September and runs until mid-February, and Winter term begins in January and runs to mid-June each year.

Can I postpone taking the course?
Yes. If you wish to decline your seat, you will need to re-express your interest the next time the course is offered.
